Street is the New Runway: Street Style 101

The term ‘Street Style’ has been all over our Instagram and Pinterest feeds, embraced by our favourite fashion bloggers, celebrities and designers for sometime now. We’re breaking it down for you – what it is and how to navigate it.

Street style or street wear is fashion that has emerged and evolved on the street, focusing on individual style rather than high fashion. It’s where creativity meets wearability. It’s not just a trend, but a part of youth culture all over the world now.

There are almost no rules when it comes to street wear other than it should be fun, cool and edgy. We at Shaye, bring you styles that reflect the street wear vibe and help you elevate your everyday. And because we love you, here’s a few tips on how you can easily upgrade your look from casual to effortless chic.

Find pieces that work for you – they should not only look good and fit you well, but also go with your style and make you feel your absolute best. Remember, your attitude is a part of your look!

Don’t underestimate the power of a bold belt, a statement bag or some bling – they can really make the simplest outfit come to life. Just make sure not to wear them all together – less IS more.

Adding a bold colour to your look is always fun (and looks great on camera!) but if you’re someone who shies away from anything colourful, adding just a pop of colour to a neutral outfit will gently nudge you out of your comfort zone. It can be your shoes, a handbag or a printed scarf. You can also try playing with textures or a subtle print if you want to stick to neutrals.

Try experimenting with different types of footwear with different outfits. We love the dress and sneakers combo to instantly make your look more laid back and chill. Or booties with a more casual outfit to make it look more ‘dressed up’.

Little adjustments can really make you look effortless chic. Try folding the sleeves on your shirt or tee. Tying or tucking in your top (you can try a half tuck too) will define the waistline and make your outfit look put together. We also love the relaxed look of cuffed jeans or pants!

This is key. Embrace your point of view, make your own rules and just have fun with your outfit. Streetwear is all about authenticity and owning your unique personal style.
